Pour ce faire, l’ASL sollicite l’engagement du gouvernement fédéral à : Soutenir et cofinancer la mise à jour de l’étude sur le TMCD, afin d’identifier les obstacles actuels, les occasions à saisir et les recommandations concrètes à mettre en œuvre ; Investir dans les infrastructures maritimes et les cadres politiques qui renforcent la résilience et la compétitivité du secteur du transport maritime de courte distance ; Reconnaître le transport maritime de courte distance comme un mode de transport stratégique et durable, contribuant aux objectifs économiques, environnementaux et logistiques du Canada ; ASL porte une attention particulière aux politiques et règlementations qui affectent le commerce international, spécifiquement entre le Canada et les États-Unis. ASL demande: L’expansion des services de dédouanement des conteneurs de l'Agence des services frontaliers du Canada (ASFC) vers d’autres ports des Grands Lacs et de la Voie maritime du Saint-Laurent afin de libérer le potentiel commercial et logistique. Des ajustements réglementaires et politiques permettant aux ports intérieurs et régionaux de traiter directement les conteneurs internationaux, éliminant ainsi les goulets d’étranglement actuels. Un investissement fédéral et un engagement opérationnel pour soutenir cette expansion de l’ASFC — une initiative qui s’autofinancerait rapidement et renforcerait la résilience du commerce national.
