Communications regarding trade policy and ongoing Canada–Mercosur free trade agreement negotiations, more specifically with respect to access to Canadian market for refined sugar. Discussions may include potential tariff reductions and tariff rate quotas as well as their potential impacts on domestic sugar refining operations and capacity, competitiveness, and supply chain stability. Communications regarding the impacts of U.S. tariffs (and potential counter-tariffs) on the sugar and maple syrup industries, and proposing support measures in the event such tariffs and/or counter-tariffs are imposed. Steps taken to obtain financial assistance (grants, loans, tax holiday or other) from the Federal government, among other things through the Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (Industry Canada) and Transport Canada (TC), the nature and amounts of which are still unknown. The financing will be used to expand its Montréal cane sugar refinery and its Toronto distribution centre.
