This project builds upon the foundational work initiated by the First Nations Police Governance Council to advance First Nations police governance. The primary objective of this initiative is to host an annual First Nations Police Governance Conference designed specifically for First Nations police governance boards and related stakeholders. The conference will feature guest speakers, interactive workshops, and networking sessions tailored to the unique needs and priorities of First Nations communities. Through this initiative, the organization will maintain a comprehensive approach to examining and engaging with First Nations police governance boards to identify governance gaps and challenges. In doing so, it will provide targeted support to assist First Nations Police Boards in developing culturally relevant and effective strategies to address these issues, ensuring governance practices reflect and respect First Nations perspectives and priorities. Discussing the importance of Canadian Association of Police Governance as a member of policing, we can support the potential of hiring of 1000 RCMP officers and looking at improving the effectiveness of RCMP advisory boards. In partnership with our First Nations Police Governance Council we are seeking to use grant funding from Public Safety Canada to solicit First Nation input on changes for how police governance can better serve their communities. In partnership with Wilfred Laurier University, is leveraging funding from the federal government towards both improving police governance training as well as enhancing community input through potential legislative changes with those RCMP contracts at the municipal level.
