What they’re lobbying about
With respect to seeking funding through the newly created Build Communities Strong Fund (BCSF) for public infrastructure projects that will drive economic growth, enable housing, improve productivity, enhance resilience, and strengthen communities through Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada (HICC). Said funding would be for our Camp Shawnigan redevelopment. This project will build new buildings on Easter Seals BC Yukons (ESBCY) Camp Shawnigan facility at Shawnigan Lake on Vancouver Island. These buildings include cabins, a dining hall, a Multipurpose/change room/reception building, and an Arts/yoga/ studio. All of these new structures are designed to the highest standards of accessibility for persons with disabilities (PWD) with input from a multi-sectoral panel of experts in disability services and universal design. These buildings will also be built to the latest zero carbon design standards and carefully integrated into the natural environment to reduce energy consumption and preserve the lands ecology – ultimately making Camp Shawnigan more sustainable and resilient to climate change. This project will positively impact thousands each year through expanded year-round programming for PWD and community rentals that address this high-needs areas shortage of accessible/universal public spaces.
